Neelam recalled how she was pressured into adopting a different lifestyle after marrying Sethia, including wearing only traditional Indian clothes, giving up non-vegetarian food, and abstaining from alcohol. While these changes were challenging, it was the expectation to change her identity that made her reflect deeply on her situation. She explained, "I was fine with everything, but changing my identity, that is something I was not okay with. I reached a point where I questioned myself, 'How am I allowing this?'"
The actress also shared a poignant story about how she had to deny her identity as a public figure during this time. She recounted incidents where people recognized her in public and asked, "Are you Neelam the actress?" To which she would respond, "No." This led to internal struggles, as she tried to hold her marriage together despite losing a part of herself in the process.
Despite her efforts to make the marriage work, Neelam eventually chose to walk away. She acknowledged that it was a difficult decision, stating, "For love, you do crazy things, but no woman should ever have to lose her identity." Her words strike a deep chord, shedding light on the emotional difficulties many women face in toxic relationships.
Neelam also shared a heartbreaking moment involving her daughter, Ahana, who learned about her mother’s divorce from friends during a Google search. The actress recalled coming home one day to an uncharacteristically silent house. Ahana confronted her, saying, "Mama, you never told me you were divorced." Neelam was devastated and speechless, admitting it was not how she wanted her daughter to learn about her past.
Today, Neelam is happily married to actor Samir Soni, whom she wed in 2011. The couple adopted their daughter, Ahana, in 2013, creating a loving family dynamic after the turbulent experiences of her first marriage. Neelam’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of maintaining one's identity in relationships and the strength it takes to walk away from toxicity.
