"Nick Chubb: Cleveland Got My Back"

When I went down against Pittsburgh last season, the first thought that hit me was, “Damn, I really did that again.” It was one of those moments where you don't feel much pain, but you hear everything—the silence from the crowd, the whispers of teammates, and eventually, the prayers. But when the opposing team, the Steelers, started praying over me, I knew this was serious.

This wasn’t my first rodeo. Back in my sophomore year at Georgia, I suffered a career-threatening injury that left my leg bent backward in a way that legs shouldn’t bend. I didn’t even know how bad it was until I saw a video trending online with one of those graphic content warnings. It was tough, but I came back stronger. This time, though, I wasn’t so naive. I had metal plates in my knee from the previous injury, and as I lay there, I feared that this might be it—that maybe I wouldn’t be put back together again.

In moments like that, the doubts creep in hard. I was thinking, "Why me, Lord? Is this the end?" But there’s always been one thing that’s kept me going—my family, my “why.” My mom raised me, my brother, and my sister mostly on her own, working double shifts to make ends meet. I saw her stress and cry over bills late at night. It made me want to do everything I could to take care of her, to make sure she didn’t have to worry about anything.

That’s why I worked so hard at football. It wasn’t just about making a name for myself. It was about helping my family. My grandma taught me the value of hard work, even if it meant picking up rocks from her steep, gravel-covered yard in the summer heat, only to be told to spread them back out. She shaped me, and her mantra, “I’m smart, I’m intelligent, and I believe in myself,” became something I said every night growing up. It gave me the confidence to push through the hardest times.

When I got injured again, there were rumors that the Browns might cut me. It’s a cold business, and I understood that. But Cleveland had my back. The love and support I got from the city and fans was incredible. Even in the darkest moments, those messages lifted me. The front office told me they wanted me back, and it wasn’t just about the numbers—it was something deeper.

Cleveland believed in me, and because of that, I kept believing too. I got back into the gym, went back to my roots, and put in the work. Now, after months of rehab and relentless training, I’m back, stronger than ever. This city has become my home, and I’m proud to give everything I have for Cleveland, because they’ve always had my back.
