Nurses' Vote Set to Shape Future of Healthcare in Quebec
The moment has arrived for nurses in Quebec to voice their opinions as the countdown begins for an important vote scheduled for October 15, 16, and 17. This vote is critical, as it will determine whether or not to accept the conciliator's latest proposal regarding their work contracts. As the negotiations continue, the stakes have never been higher. Many nurses are feeling the weight of this decision, with some expressing that the recent proposal may not significantly differ from earlier offers. Kenza Rahmi, a spokesperson for the Quebec Nurses' Association (AIIQ), shared her insights, acknowledging the exhaustion felt among the nursing staff. "I will vote no again," she stated, emphasizing the minimal changes in the current proposal compared to previous ones. However, she also recognized that many are weary and may reluctantly accept the proposal simply to move forward.
The current situation arose after the government of Quebec and the nursing unions have struggled to reach a consensus on new working conditions. The last proposal was overwhelmingly rejected, with 61% of union members voting against it. In light of this, a conciliator has been appointed to mediate the discussions and help bridge the gap between the two parties. The upcoming vote will play a significant role in shaping the terms of the contract that governs nurses' working conditions, including crucial aspects such as mobility within the workforce—a central issue in this ongoing conflict.

From October 11 to 15, eligible members of the Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec (FIQ) will receive emails with links to access the democratic voting platform. If you haven’t received your voting information by October 15, you are urged to check your spam folder and contact your local union team for assistance. It is vital for all eligible members to ensure their voting status is confirmed to participate in this crucial process.
Voting will officially begin on October 15 at 8 p.m., and you will have until October 17 at 8 p.m. to exercise your right to vote. The outcome of this vote will not only determine the acceptance of the conciliator’s recommendations but could also lead to a new working contract for nurses, which carries immense implications for their professional lives. As such, active participation in this vote is of utmost importance.
As expressed by Julie Boivin, the regional president of the FIQ, this vote is akin to a vote of confidence in the government’s ability to handle these negotiations effectively. She noted that while she cannot predict the outcome, she is hopeful for a positive response from the membership, especially given the better working relationship her region has maintained with employers compared to others. Boivin remarked that the conciliator's adjustments might provide sufficient reassurance to the members, particularly in light of the improved conditions compared to previous proposals.
So, the upcoming days are critical for the nursing community in Quebec. With the voting period just around the corner, nurses are urged to take this opportunity seriously. This decision will have lasting effects on their work environment and their ability to deliver high-quality care to their patients. As the deadline approaches, it is clear that the voices of the nurses will shape the future of healthcare in Quebec.
