Senators Stumble Against Canadiens in Season Opener
In a disappointing start to their road campaign, the Ottawa Senators faced a tough defeat against the Montreal Canadiens, falling 4-1 at the Bell Centre. This loss marked the end of a remarkable streak of nine consecutive regular-season victories against their historic rivals, leaving fans and players alike eager for redemption. The game unfolded on October 12, 2024, and for Ottawa, it was a harsh reality check after an optimistic start to the season.
Right from the opening puck drop, the game was charged with intensity and emotions ran high. The Senators aimed to carry momentum into this first road game, but it was the Canadiens who struck first. Emil Heineman opened the scoring for Montreal, netting his first NHL goal with just over nine minutes left in the first period. The goal came during a power play, putting Ottawa on the back foot early in the contest. Just a few minutes later, Cole Caufield doubled Montreal's lead, leaving the Senators trailing 2-0 as they headed into the first intermission.

Despite having the advantage in shots—16-11 at the end of the second period—the Senators struggled to convert opportunities into goals. The second frame passed with neither team scoring, a frustrating outcome for Ottawa as they sought to find their rhythm. The Senators showed promise in their attack but were ultimately stifled by a solid defensive effort from the Canadiens.
The third period began with hope for the Senators when Montreal was awarded a penalty shot. However, Mike Matheson hit the post, leaving the door open for Ottawa. Shortly after, Alex Newhook pushed Montreal's lead to 3-0, making the task even tougher for the Senators. Yet, Tim Stützle gave Ottawa a glimmer of hope by scoring his third goal of the season, narrowing the gap to 3-1 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. His goal, assisted by Brady Tkachuk and Nick Jensen, showcased the talent and potential within the Senators’ lineup.
Unfortunately for Ottawa, the celebration was short-lived. Less than two minutes later, Caufield found the back of the net again, restoring the Canadiens’ three-goal advantage. With the Senators trying to claw their way back into the game, they pulled their goaltender in the final minutes, attempting to generate some late-game magic. Despite mounting pressure and several scoring chances, Ottawa couldn't find the back of the net again, sealing their fate with a final score of 4-1.
Looking ahead, the Senators will need to regroup and refocus as they prepare to face the Los Angeles Kings on Monday afternoon at the Canadian Tire Centre. This Thanksgiving matinee promises to be a special occasion for fans, with the first 10,000 attendees receiving complimentary beverages and popcorn in a celebration dubbed "Sensgiving." As the Senators take the ice again, there’s a palpable sense of determination to bounce back from this defeat and start a new winning streak. Fans are hopeful that with time and teamwork, the Senators will reclaim their momentum and make a strong showing in the coming games.
