Sir David Jason Reflects on the Lasting Impact of Del Boy and His One Regret
Sir David Jason, a beloved figure in British television, recently opened up about his feelings toward his iconic role as Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses . In an interview with BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay, Jason shared that while he treasures the joy the character has brought to fans, it also comes with a sense of lingering attachment that he refers to as a "ghost." For him, Del Boy has become a defining figure in his career, one that follows him everywhere—even though he has played numerous other characters throughout his impressive career.

As the conversation unfolded, Kay noted how Jason's positive demeanor mirrors that of Derek "Del Boy" Trotter, to which Jason humorously responded, "Yeah, I’m afraid it does. That Derek Trotter thing, he’s a bit of a ghost that comes along behind me, like A Christmas Carol." It’s not so much that Jason feels "haunted" by Del Boy, but rather, he explained, “He’s with me all the time.” Wherever he goes, fans eagerly recognize him as Del Boy and greet him with famous catchphrases like "Lovely jubbly!" However, as much as this adoration delights him, Jason admits there’s a bittersweet side to it.
The actor shared that his "only regret" is the feeling that despite a long and varied career, the public seems to remember him solely for this one role. “I’ve done so many other things that everybody seems to have forgotten about," Jason lamented, noting that it sometimes feels like he’s "only ever played Derek Trotter."
Jason’s reflections didn’t stop there. He also revealed his personal dream of acting on stage with the National Theatre, an ambition that remains unfulfilled. “I always wanted to be a National Theatre player,” he confessed, describing it as a romantic vision of performing alongside renowned actors in grand productions. Although he never achieved that particular dream, he remains hopeful, humorously adding that he’s still “available” for the National Theatre.
While it may seem like the iconic Del Boy has cast a shadow over other aspects of his career, Jason remains grateful for the role’s impact and the love it has garnered from fans. His enduring positivity and light-heartedness in the interview demonstrate that while he may have one regret, Sir David Jason continues to embrace the lasting legacy of Del Boy with grace.
