Superboats Festival Makes Waves at Lake Macquarie
This weekend, Lake Macquarie is set to come alive with the exhilarating Fast and Loud Festival, a spectacular event that promises to be faster, louder, bigger, and better than ever before. Kicking off the festivities was a thrilling launch on Thursday, where a superboat raced across the lake at a staggering speed of over 150 km/h, while the world-renowned pilot Matt Hall performed gravity-defying aerobatics just above the water. This breathtaking display is only a taste of what attendees can expect during this thrilling event.
The festival will feature the first three races of the 2024-2025 Offshore Superboat Championships, with a challenging course that takes competitors from Marmong Point to Booragul, across Speers Point, and down to Warners Bay and Eleebana. Spectators will be treated to sleek, twin-hulled superboats capable of reaching speeds of up to 240 km/h and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in under two seconds. This year’s lineup includes multiple renowned pilots, including the Australian champion Darren Nicholson, who is set to showcase his incredible skills on the water.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz expressed excitement about the festival’s expansion this year, thanks to the NSW Government’s Open Streets Program. For the first time, streets in both Warners Bay and Belmont will be closed to traffic, transforming the area into a vibrant festival space for all to enjoy. Mayor Shultz emphasized, “This weekend is going to deliver speed, action, and fun for all ages.” Various livesites around the lake will offer some of the best viewing spots, along with live music, food, market stalls, and roving entertainment that will enhance the overall experience.
Minister for Roads, Arts, Music, and the Night-Time Economy John Graham also voiced his enthusiasm for the event. He remarked, “Too often, our main streets are something we drive through rather than drive to. The Open Streets Program aims to temporarily transform these streets into welcoming public spaces, celebrating the unique personality of each town.”
The festival promises a packed schedule of activities, kicking off with a free concert by Love That Hat at the Warners Bay rotunda on Friday evening. Saturday’s lineup includes an action-packed day with superboat races, an aerobatic display from Matt Hall Racing, and vibrant festivities at multiple livesites throughout the area. Belmont will feature live music, markets, and various activities for families, ensuring there's something for everyone.
As the excitement builds, Sunday will continue the festivities with more superboat racing at Warners Bay, powerboat competitions at Rathmines, and a Show and Shine car exhibition at Speers Point Park. With the festival attracting thousands of spectators in previous years, the community eagerly anticipates this year's event, which is expected to build upon last year's attendance of over 12,500.
The Fast and Loud Festival is not just about racing; it embodies the spirit of community, bringing people together to celebrate speed, excitement, and the beautiful surroundings of Lake Macquarie.
