Thanksgiving Weekend Municipal Service Adjustments for Halifax Residents

As Thanksgiving approaches, the Halifax Regional Municipality is making several important adjustments to municipal services for the long weekend, particularly focusing on the holiday occurring on Monday, October 14. These changes aim to ensure that residents are well-informed about the schedule and can plan accordingly. Let’s dive into the details.

First and foremost, if you rely on solid waste collection, it's essential to note that there will be no garbage, organics, or recyclables collection services on Monday, October 14. Instead, the curbside collection that typically happens on Monday will occur on Saturday, October 12. Residents are encouraged to place their waste materials curbside before 7 a.m. on collection day. This is crucial to ensure that waste is collected without any disruptions. The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility will also be closed on the holiday but will be open on Saturday, October 12, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the Materials Recovery Facility will have similar hours on that Saturday, operating from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For those needing to dispose of special household waste, please remember that the Household Special Waste Depot will be closed on Saturday, October 12, but will reopen on Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a Mobile Household Special Waste Depot on Saturday, October 12, at Mic Mac Mall, where residents can drop off their items.

Next up, Halifax Transit services will operate on a modified holiday schedule on Monday. Buses will be running, but do check the specific times as they may differ from regular service hours. The Alderney Ferry service will also operate under holiday hours, beginning its first trip at 7:30 a.m., while the Woodside Ferry service will not be in operation that day.

If you’re looking to enjoy some recreational activities, be aware that many municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, October 14. However, the Emera Oval will remain open, weather permitting, and the Sackville Sports Stadium will also be operational. The Emera Oval’s summer/fall season wraps up on Monday, so it’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy activities like roller skating, biking, or skateboarding before the winter season takes over. Equipment rentals for these activities will still be available at no cost.

For those who may need assistance or have inquiries, the 311 Contact Centre will be closed on the holiday, but urgent matters can still be reported. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, October 15. Additionally, the Alderney Gate, Bayers Road, and Musquodoboit Harbour Customer Service centres will also be closed on Monday, reopening for normal business on Tuesday.

Lastly, a quick note for drivers: on-street paid parking will be free on Monday, October 14. However, do remain mindful of other posted signage, including no-stopping areas and accessible parking spaces.

With all these adjustments in place, the Halifax Regional Municipality encourages everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving long weekend. Whether you're spending it with family, friends, or enjoying some leisure time, it's essential to be aware of these changes to make the most of your holiday.
