Toronto Streets Transform as Waterfront Marathon Weekend Takes Over
This weekend, the Toronto Waterfront Marathon is set to dominate the city’s streets as nearly 30,000 runners—both elite and recreational—prepare to participate in one of the most exciting annual sporting events in Canada. The marathon includes a 5K on Saturday, with the half-marathon and full marathon taking place on Sunday. The event will attract not only runners but also over 100,000 spectators from more than 70 countries, making it a vibrant and lively celebration throughout the city.
However, while it's an exciting time for athletes and supporters, Toronto drivers should prepare for major road closures, which will affect key parts of the city all weekend long. Starting Friday evening at 6 p.m. and running through to Sunday at 9 p.m., major streets like Bay Street, University Avenue, Lake Shore Boulevard, and others will be closed for extended periods. For drivers, this means significant disruptions, so it’s important to plan routes carefully to avoid frustration.

On Saturday, the 5K race will see road closures in central areas, including University Avenue and Bay Street. Then, Sunday’s half and full marathon will close down larger sections of the city, including parts of Queen Street, King Street, Richmond Street, and many others. Roads like Lake Shore Boulevard West, University Avenue, and Bloor Street West will also be closed for much of the morning and afternoon.
For those not involved in the marathon, Toronto still has plenty to offer this weekend. The North York Diwali Fest at Mel Lastman Square will feature stunning light displays, Indian cuisine, live music, and dancing to celebrate the festival of lights. Meanwhile, Riverdale Farm’s Boo Barn offers family-friendly Halloween activities, including pumpkin carving and crafts, perfect for getting into the spooky spirit.
With the excitement of the marathon, road closures, and cultural festivities, Toronto promises a weekend packed with events and energy. Whether you’re cheering on the runners or looking to explore something else in the city, there’s no shortage of action this weekend. Just be sure to keep an eye on those road closures if you're planning to drive!
