Tragic Armed Robbery Claims Life of Armored Truck Worker in Kings Mountain
In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves through the Kings Mountain community, a deadly armed robbery unfolded on the morning of October 30, 2024. The robbery, which took place at a pharmacy ATM, resulted in the tragic death of Walter Henderson IV, a 29-year-old employee of Loomis Fargo, who was shot while servicing the machine. As authorities continue their investigation, they are appealing to the public for assistance in locating a vehicle linked to the crime.
The grim scene began unfolding around 9 a.m. in the Prescriptions Plus parking lot, located at the intersection of East King Street and North Oriental Avenue. Witnesses reported that a black Jeep Compass Freedom Edition was seen fleeing the area shortly after the gunfire erupted. Police later confirmed that this vehicle had arrived at the scene just before the shooting occurred. The Jeep, distinctive for its hood emblazoned with a star decal, reportedly had temporary paper tags and was driven by a Black male.

When officers responded to the scene, they found Henderson on the ground next to an unsecured ATM, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after. Authorities have since revealed that Henderson was armed at the time of the incident, and a weapon was recovered from the scene. However, it remains unclear whether there was any struggle or if he was able to defend himself during the attack.
The police have launched an extensive investigation into the robbery, treating it as a homicide. They are working closely with the FBI and the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, given the alarming trend of armored truck robberies in the greater Charlotte area over the past few months. Chief Gerald Childress of the Kings Mountain Police Department has emphasized their commitment to bringing the perpetrator to justice, stating, "We will locate you, we will find you. It may take some time, but we will find you and bring you to justice."
As of now, the police have not made any arrests, but they are optimistic that information from the public will help advance the investigation. They have encouraged anyone with knowledge about the incident or the suspect’s vehicle to contact the Kings Mountain Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit.
The community is left grappling with the loss of Henderson, who was simply doing his job that fateful morning. With ongoing concerns about the safety of armored truck workers, many are calling for increased security measures to protect those who serve in these high-risk roles. As this investigation continues, the Kings Mountain community stands united in hope that justice will prevail, and that the individuals responsible for this senseless act of violence will be held accountable.
