Ukraine Accuses North Korea of Supporting Russia with Military Personnel in War
In a significant development in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused North Korea of providing not only weapons but also military personnel to Russia. This marks an escalation in the alliance between Russia and North Korea, shifting from arms supplies to direct manpower support for Russian military operations. Zelenskyy highlighted this in his nightly video address, expressing concern over this growing relationship, stating, "It is no longer just about transferring weapons. It is actually about transferring people from North Korea to the occupier's military forces."
This alliance between Russia and North Korea has alarmed Ukraine and its allies, leading Zelenskyy to call for increased military aid to prevent further escalation. He emphasized the need for long-range military capabilities and more sustained support from Ukraine's Western partners. "The front line needs more support. We are talking about more long-range capabilities for Ukraine and more sustained supplies for our forces," Zelenskyy said, suggesting that without this help, the war could grow even larger.

Zelenskyy's concerns are supported by recent reports from South Korea. The country’s Minister of National Defense, Kim Yong-hyun, stated last week that there is a "high possibility" North Korea has already sent troops to assist Russia. Reports suggest that some North Korean officers may have been killed in Ukrainian strikes, though Russia has dismissed these claims as "fake news."
The alliance between Russia and North Korea has been steadily growing since the start of the war in Ukraine. In September 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited Russia to meet with President Vladimir Putin, where discussions about military cooperation were held. Putin’s subsequent visit to Pyongyang in June 2024 further solidified this partnership, with Kim promising full support for Russia's efforts in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy has also pointed out that Ukraine's allies must evolve their strategies in response to these developments. He reiterated his calls for the West to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles to target military infrastructure deep inside Russia, aiming to reduce its warfighting capabilities. This call has yet to receive full backing from Ukraine's Western partners, but Zelenskyy vowed to continue pushing for it, stressing that “true peace can only be achieved through strength.”
As the war drags on, the deepening ties between Russia and North Korea have raised the stakes. Western leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, are expected to discuss this issue at an upcoming meeting in Germany, which had been delayed due to Hurricane Milton. As Ukraine continues to defend its territory, the support of its allies remains critical in countering this new wave of cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
