Unprecedented Flooding Hits Valencia and Albacete, Causing Severe Disruptions
Today, Valencia and Albacete in Spain are facing severe consequences from torrential rains brought on by the weather phenomenon known as DANA. This "Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos," or "Isolated Depression at High Levels," has led to overwhelming rainfall across the region, dumping an incredible 200 liters per square meter within just two hours in some areas. The downpour has left entire areas flooded, causing infrastructure disruptions and sparking safety concerns for residents and travelers alike.
One of the most significant disruptions has been to Spain’s high-speed rail network, where the AVE line between Madrid and Valencia has been temporarily suspended due to substantial water accumulation on the tracks. The interruption impacts the segment between Siete Aguas and Chiva, both located near the metropolitan area of Valencia. With safety as the priority, the rail operator Adif has taken preventive measures to halt travel in these affected areas until the flooding is addressed. Additionally, regional trains on the Utiel-València Nord line have also been halted, adding to the overall transportation challenges in the area.

These rainfall levels are not only unusual but have led to other severe incidents. For instance, earlier today, an AVE train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed near Álora, Málaga, due to heavy rainfall. Thankfully, all 291 passengers on board were rescued safely. However, this incident underscores the dangers posed by these extraordinary weather conditions.
In addition to the flooding, other areas of Spain have experienced extreme weather events as well. For example, El Ejido saw a remarkable hailstorm that resulted in hailstones as large as eggs, causing significant property damage. Several local governments, including in ten municipalities across Valencia and Alicante, have canceled school for safety reasons. In Murcia, the storm delivered a lightning spectacle so intense that witnesses described it as a “deluge that leaves you breathless.”
In Castilla-La Mancha, the effects have been similarly devastating. The Fuensanta reservoir in Yeste, Albacete, recorded 120 liters per square meter in less than a day. The meteorological agency AEMET has issued an orange alert for heavy rains in Alcaraz, Segura, and other areas, anticipating that the heavy rain and storm patterns will continue. The region is now under the specific emergency plan, Meteocam, which provides operational resources to help manage these adverse weather conditions.
Altogether, this series of events serves as a reminder of the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather episodes, challenging infrastructure and requiring robust response measures. Local authorities and emergency services are working tirelessly to manage the situation, but residents are urged to stay informed and cautious as the weather continues to pose threats in the days ahead.
