ABC Farewells Long-Standing Radio Icon Simon Marnie
Simon Marnie, a cherished voice on ABC Radio Sydney’s Weekend Mornings, has announced his departure from the network at the end of this year. For decades, Simon has been a steadfast companion to countless listeners, bringing stories that bridged the gap between city and country, offering cultural insights, and delivering critical news during times of crisis. His departure marks the end of an era in Australian radio, leaving behind a legacy of connection, storytelling, and community engagement.
Simon's career in broadcasting began in the 1980s at 2UW, where his passion for radio took root. By 1993, he had joined the ABC as a presenter on triple j, the youth network where he spent a decade capturing the vibrancy of Australian culture. Reflecting on that period, Simon humorously noted, “It’s like being at Woodstock: if you can remember it, you probably weren’t there.” His versatility extended to television, where he conceived and produced SBS’s music show nomad and contributed to ABC's TVTV .

In 1996, Simon returned to ABC Radio Sydney, cementing his place as a familiar voice for the community. Over the years, he hosted various programs, eventually landing his beloved Weekend Mornings slot in 2000. This program became a unique platform, connecting Sydney's urban audience with regional communities and celebrating the diverse fabric of New South Wales. Simon’s discussions on food, culture, and local events enriched weekends for countless listeners, earning him accolades from top chefs and hospitality leaders.
Simon’s dedication extended beyond the studio. He delivered crucial emergency broadcasts during natural disasters such as floods and bushfires, often broadcasting for hours on end. Following the devastating 2019–20 bushfire season, he toured impacted communities with his Road to Recovery series, offering solace and support to those in need.
Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Simon adapted, broadcasting from a makeshift studio in his sunroom to ensure his listeners stayed informed and connected. His efforts exemplified the resilience and adaptability that have defined his career.
Simon expressed mixed emotions about his departure, saying, “While saddened to leave my colleagues and my treasured audience, I am looking forward to the opportunities ahead. My parents had 2BL on every morning—it’s been such a rich part of my life.”
ABC Director of Audio Ben Latimer praised Simon’s contribution, highlighting how his shows encouraged listeners to discover the vibrant diversity of Sydney and beyond. To bid farewell, Simon is hosting a final Weekend Show Christmas Picnic at Government House in Sydney, inviting fans to celebrate his remarkable journey.
