In an emotional moment on the show, McGuigan reflected on Danika’s earlier battle with leukemia when she was a child. He shared how, at the time, he had been making the film The Boxer alongside Daniel Day Lewis, and had to leave the set when his daughter was diagnosed. Despite doctors’ grim prognosis, Danika fought hard and made a remarkable recovery after two years of intense chemotherapy. "She had leukemia, and they thought she wasn't going to get better, but she fought back and she won it," McGuigan recalled tearfully, revealing the immense strength Danika displayed throughout that time.
His emotional confession touched the hearts of his fellow campmates, who offered their support and empathy. N-Dubz star Tulisa Contostavlos, who was also on the show, shared some comforting words with McGuigan, saying, "You're a man going through pain and you're vulnerable about it, that takes strength. There is no rules to grieving... it's a reflection of your love."
McGuigan spoke of the emotional toll of watching his daughter suffer in the hospital, saying it was “hard for weeks in the hospital, just watching, shocking.” His vulnerability and openness about the painful experience brought out an outpouring of support from both his campmates and viewers at home.
Later in the episode, Coleen Rooney, also a contestant on the show, became emotional as she shared her own grief over the loss of her sister, Rosie, who passed away from a rare genetic disorder called Rett syndrome when she was just 14 years old. The bond of shared loss created a poignant moment in the camp, with McGuigan and Rooney finding comfort in each other's stories.
The conversation in the jungle about the loss of loved ones was not just about mourning, but about the strength it takes to endure such deep pain. McGuigan’s openness allowed for a deeply human moment on the show, highlighting the emotional journeys of not only the celebrity contestants but of the viewers as well. As the 24th series of I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! continues, it is moments like these that remind us of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable heartache.
