Carlos Sainz Shines in Las Vegas GP Qualifying as George Russell Claims Pole
In a thrilling Las Vegas Grand Prix qualifying session, George Russell took pole position for Mercedes, with Carlos Sainz of Ferrari securing a strong second place. The Las Vegas street circuit, known for its unpredictability, saw Russell maintain Mercedes' impressive pace, a feat that was almost too good to be true considering their struggles earlier in the season. Russell edged out Sainz by a narrow 0.098 seconds, leaving the Ferrari driver to settle for second, while Alpine's Pierre Gasly surprised everyone by taking third.
Despite a late push from the Red Bulls and McLarens, it was Russell who clinched the top spot after overcoming some dramatic moments during the session. In the final stages of Q3, Russell brushed the barriers, damaging his front wing, but Mercedes quickly repaired the damage, allowing him to finish his final run just in time. The pressure was on, but Russell’s determination paid off, marking a significant achievement for Mercedes in what has been a challenging season.

Behind Russell, Sainz delivered a commendable performance, securing second for Ferrari ahead of Gasly, who impressed with his pace. Charles Leclerc, his Ferrari teammate, qualified fourth, showcasing the strength of the Scuderia, especially on the long runs seen during practice. However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for some drivers. Max Verstappen, aiming for a fourth consecutive World Championship, was not at his best but still managed to finish fifth, just ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris. Norris had been expected to challenge Verstappen for that crucial spot but was ultimately edged out.
Lewis Hamilton, who had shown strong form earlier in the weekend, had a frustrating qualifying session. After a series of mistakes, including locking up on his first flying lap and another error in the final stages, Hamilton had to settle for 10th on the grid, which was a bitter disappointment for the seven-time World Champion. His teammate Russell, however, managed to make the most of his opportunity and took advantage of an improving track to claim the top spot.
With Max Verstappen starting fifth, he has a chance to wrap up the championship with a strong finish in the race, but Lando Norris remains a key rival. The race itself is shaping up to be a dramatic affair with plenty of potential for surprises.
