Cranbrook Secures New Five-Year Partnership with WestJet

Cranbrook is excited to announce a significant new partnership with WestJet Encore Ltd., as the city has recently signed a five-year air carrier operating agreement for services at the Canadian Rockies International Airport. This agreement officially commenced on October 27, right after the previous contract with Pacific Coastal Airlines, which had provided WestJet Link services over the past five years, came to an end.

Under this new agreement, WestJet will be responsible for paying a fee of $9.00 for each passenger who boards or deplanes at the airport. Notably, this fee structure can be adjusted in the future without needing to alter the overall operating agreement, providing some flexibility moving forward. Additionally, WestJet will contribute an Airport Improvement Fee of $3.00 for each revenue passenger boarding a flight.

Tristen Chernove, the CEO of Elevate Airports, the management body overseeing the Canadian Rockies International Airport, addressed city council members recently, highlighting some of the current challenges in the aviation industry. Although the airport is experiencing a reduction in flight schedules, Chernove reported an impressive 23% increase in daily seat capacity. He acknowledged the difficulties in predicting the flight schedules from carriers, noting that the air carriers are not as forthcoming with their plans as they have been in the past. This uncertainty makes it challenging to project future service levels accurately.

Despite these challenges, Chernove expressed optimism for the near future. He confidently stated that improvements in the flight schedule could begin as soon as late January of next year. He emphasized that he remains actively engaged in discussions with other airlines to explore the possibility of expanding services at the Canadian Rockies International Airport. However, he is cautious about making hasty decisions that could compromise the long-term benefits that the airport is expected to achieve as it navigates through this challenging phase.

Overall, this new agreement with WestJet marks a pivotal step for Cranbrook as it strives to enhance air travel options for residents and visitors alike. The collaboration promises to bring new opportunities for growth and improved connectivity for the region, reinforcing Cranbrook's commitment to facilitating efficient and accessible air travel. This partnership not only signifies a forward-thinking approach to transportation but also highlights Cranbrook’s determination to adapt and thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of the aviation industry.
