Sharks Call Up Yaroslav Askarov from Barracuda for First Time
The San Jose Sharks have made an exciting move by recalling goaltender Yaroslav Askarov from their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda. This marks Askarov's first recall to the Sharks, and it’s a significant step in his career. At just 22 years old, Askarov has already proven himself as one of the top young goaltenders in the hockey world. His performance in the AHL this season has been nothing short of spectacular, with a 6-3-0 record in nine games, including a remarkable .939 save percentage and a 1.92 goals-against average.
Askarov's achievements earlier this year in the AHL were particularly impressive. He was named the AHL Goaltender of the Month for October after going undefeated with a 5-0-0 record, a 1.20 GAA, and an incredible .959 save percentage. This kind of performance has earned him a well-deserved call-up to the NHL, where the Sharks hope his skills can help bolster their goaltending depth. Currently, Askarov ranks among the top three in the AHL for save percentage, and his consistency has been evident as he also ranks among the league leaders in wins and GAA.

Before joining the Barracuda, Askarov had already made an impression in the NHL with the Nashville Predators. He made his debut in January 2023 and earned his first win in December 2023 against Washington, where he recorded 29 saves on 31 shots. Askarov's NHL career so far has been brief but promising, with a 1-1-0 record, a .914 save percentage, and a 2.58 GAA across three appearances.
Askarov’s journey to the NHL started in Russia, where he played for SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL. He made history in 2019 as the second-youngest goaltender to ever start a KHL game, debuting at just 17 years old. His performance in the KHL was strong, posting a .937 save percentage and 1.48 GAA in 16 career games.
The Sharks acquired Askarov from the Nashville Predators this past August in a trade that also brought forward Nolan Burke and a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft in exchange for David Edstrom, Magnus Chrona, and a first-round pick. This trade was a part of the Sharks' long-term strategy to build a strong future, and Askarov is now an integral part of that vision.
Askarov's call-up comes at a time when the Sharks are looking to build for the future, and his potential could play a key role in the team's success.
