St. Louis Blues Appoint Jim Montgomery as Head Coach in Strategic Shift
The St. Louis Blues have announced a major change in their leadership by relieving Drew Bannister of his coaching duties and appointing Jim Montgomery as the team’s 28th head coach. Montgomery, who signed a five-year contract, returns to the Blues organization, where he previously served as an assistant coach from 2020 to 2022. This decision comes amid the team’s effort to reinvigorate its performance and leverage Montgomery’s impressive coaching credentials.

Montgomery, 55, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to his new role. In his previous stint as head coach of the Boston Bruins, Montgomery achieved remarkable success, including leading the team to an NHL-best regular-season record during his tenure. The 2022-23 season was particularly historic, as he guided the Bruins to a league-record 65 wins and an astonishing 135 points, earning him the prestigious Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. Despite his regular-season triumphs, postseason struggles ultimately led to his dismissal from Boston earlier this month.
Prior to his time with the Bruins, Montgomery coached the Dallas Stars, compiling a solid 60-43-10 record. He also made significant contributions to the Blues during his time as an assistant coach, helping the team achieve one of its best regular-season performances in franchise history in 2021-22. Beyond the NHL, Montgomery has an impressive background in college hockey, having led the University of Denver to an NCAA National Championship in 2017, and in the USHL, where he secured two Clark Cups with the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
This move signals a bold step for the Blues, who are clearly intent on capitalizing on Montgomery’s ability to build competitive teams. The decision to hire Montgomery underscores the organization’s commitment to success and its confidence in his leadership. With a roster full of potential and a dedicated new head coach, the Blues aim to achieve new heights in the NHL.
