Storm Bert to Bring Snow, Rain, and Travel Disruptions to York and Beyond

As Storm Bert makes its way toward the UK, York and surrounding regions are bracing for significant weather impacts this weekend. The Met Office has issued warnings for heavy rain, snow, and potential travel disruptions, marking the arrival of the season’s second named storm.

Starting early Saturday, York is expected to experience heavy snowfall, particularly during the morning hours. The storm’s wintry conditions are forecast to last until 8 PM, with snow likely to accumulate, especially in higher areas. Coastal regions in the northeast will also feel the storm’s effects, with a mix of rain and snow causing hazardous conditions.

Dan Holley, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, noted a shift toward milder air following the storm. However, this transition will be accompanied by heavy rain and snow across northern England and Scotland, along with strong winds. Some areas could see snow depths increasing significantly on higher terrain. Rainfall levels are also expected to be substantial, with 50-75 mm in many areas and over 100 mm possible in parts of Wales and southwest England.

The heavy precipitation, combined with melting snow, could lead to localized flooding and travel challenges over the weekend. While York’s River Ouse levels remain low at present, the Met Office advises vigilance due to rapid water level changes associated with the storm.

Leeds, another city in the region, is also preparing for adverse conditions. With temperatures expected to plunge as low as 1°C, the city could be “colder than Canada” during the peak of the storm. Snow and icy conditions on Friday night will transition to milder weather on Saturday, with temperatures rising to an unusual high of 14°C by Sunday. The thaw, however, brings its own risks of flooding and slippery surfaces.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated on weather alerts, plan travel cautiously, and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of unpredictable and severe weather.
