Tragic Death Leads to Major Change at Halifax Walmart

A tragic incident at a Halifax Walmart has drawn significant attention after a 19-year-old employee, Gursimran Kaur, was found dead inside a bakery oven on October 19, 2024. Authorities were called to the Walmart on Mumford Road around 9:30 p.m. that evening after concerns were raised about Kaur’s whereabouts. Tragically, it was confirmed that her body had been discovered inside one of the store’s large walk-in ovens in the bakery department.

In the wake of this devastating event, a stop-work order was issued by Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour, temporarily halting operations at the bakery. However, this order was lifted after safety inspections confirmed that the store had met all required standards. Despite this, the community and the company have been deeply affected by the tragedy. Walmart Canada announced plans to remove the large oven from the store, which had been part of a previously planned remodeling program. The oven, which is now linked to the death, will no longer be used in any of the store’s future operations.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kaur’s death is ongoing, and while Walmart has pledged to support the police inquiry, very few details have been made public. Police have not shared any new information, leaving the community, her family, and the public waiting for answers. It is understood that Kaur’s mother, who also worked at the store, discovered her daughter’s body after she had been unable to reach her by phone and grew concerned when Kaur was missing for over an hour.

Since the tragedy, there has been an outpouring of support for Kaur’s family, particularly from the local community and the Maritime Sikh Society, which confirmed that Kaur and her mother had moved to Canada from India a few years ago. The community has rallied around the family, with hundreds of people attending a candlelight vigil to honor Kaur’s memory. A GoFundMe campaign launched by the society has raised nearly $200,000 to assist the family with funeral costs and to bring Kaur’s father and brother from India to Nova Scotia.

The Walmart store on Mumford Road has remained closed since the tragic incident, with no indication yet as to when it will reopen. The tragic death of a young worker has left a profound impact on the community, as they continue to await more information about how this unimaginable event occurred.
