Winter Weather Forces Highway 17 North Closure and Reopening Near Sault Ste. Marie
In a significant weather update for Northern Ontario, Highway 17 North has been temporarily closed due to the ongoing winter storm. Initially, the closure affected all traffic between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa, specifically at Blueberry Hill, just south of Goulais River. This closure comes as Environment Canada has issued a snow squall warning for the region, predicting significant snowfall accumulation between 15 to 30 cm by Wednesday.
The closure caused major disruptions as snow squalls moved through the area, reducing visibility and creating dangerous driving conditions. These snow squalls are expected to bring heavy snowfall and low visibility, making travel especially hazardous. The MTO (Ministry of Transportation Ontario) had previously closed the highway entirely at the MTO weight scales in the Heyden area as of the evening of November 25.

However, the good news is that, as of November 26, Highway 17 North has reopened to traffic. While this provides a sense of relief for travelers in the region, the impact of winter weather is far from over. The snow squall watch issued by Environment Canada
