A Dream Come True: Abel Walatee's Journey to Western United and the A-League

This season has truly been a "dream come true" for the 20-year-old, who has overcome incredible challenges to reach this moment in his life. Walatee's journey is not just about football; it is about family, identity, and the pursuit of a better life.
Born in Ghana, Walatee’s early years were marked by hardship and separation. At just six months old, he moved to Liberia to live with his grandmother while his parents sought better opportunities abroad. Growing up in a place where football was not a priority, Walatee did not have the luxury of pursuing his passion for sports. It was a tough childhood, and football seemed distant. But all that changed when, at the age of eight, he boarded a plane to Australia. The decision to come was made on his behalf, and it marked a turning point in his life.
Walatee recalls the confusion and fear he felt when he was told he was going to live with his mother in Australia. "To be honest, when I heard I was coming here, I didn’t want to come," he admitted. His grandmother, who had raised him, was the only mother he knew. The idea of leaving her and coming to a new country to live with a woman he had never met was terrifying. "My grandmother was my mum," Walatee explained. "I was scared on the way here. I didn’t know who I was going to stay with."

The adjustment to life in Australia was not easy. Walatee faced a language barrier, struggled to fit in at school, and dealt with the emotional weight of being away from his grandmother. Yet, through it all, football became a source of solace and escape. "Football helped me get over that obstacle," he said, as it provided a way for him to connect with others despite his struggles with English.
It was not love at first sight, but football eventually captured Walatee's heart. Initially more interested in tennis and swimming, he began to take football more seriously around the age of 11. His first taste of competitive football came when a coach spotted him playing during a school clinic and invited him to try out for the North Sunshine Eagles. After a successful trial, he began his journey through the youth ranks. His talent quickly became undeniable, and it wasn't long before he was playing for Green Gully in the NPL and later earning a place with Melbourne City's youth squad.
Walatee's path took another turn when an opportunity to play abroad emerged. He signed with Danish club Akademisk Boldklub Gladsaxe on a four-year deal, but the experience was far from smooth. Injuries, lack of playing time, and isolation from his family left him feeling frustrated and unsupported. The challenges he faced in Denmark, however, were not in vain. The time spent there, though difficult, helped Walatee grow as both a player and a person.
Realizing he was not getting the playing time he needed in Denmark, Walatee made the brave decision to return to Western United. His decision paid off when, after a successful season in the NPL, he was offered his first A-League contract. It was a moment of immense pride, not just for Walatee but for his family as well. "Getting that first pro contract made me really proud," he reflected. "It’s something I’ve been working really hard towards. All the work I’ve been putting in is finally paying off."
Now, as a key player for Western United, Walatee has his sights set on even bigger goals. He is aiming to secure a spot in the starting XI and, in the long run, dreams of representing Australia at the international level. His story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the support of those who believe in you, no matter the challenges along the way. For Walatee, this is just the beginning.
