Alex Killorn Champions Cancer Screening Awareness Through Hockey
Alex Killorn, a renowned NHL player and two-time Stanley Cup champion, has taken on a cause that extends far beyond the rink. As a champion for Hockey Fights Cancer (HFC) —a joint initiative of the NHL and NHLPA—Killorn is using his platform to advocate for cancer screening awareness. Inspired by personal losses and a desire to save lives, the Anaheim Ducks winger hopes to encourage early detection and empower communities to prioritize health.
Killorn’s involvement with AstraZeneca’s “Get Body Checked Against Cancer” campaign resonates deeply with his life experiences. Having lost three grandparents to cancer—his paternal grandfather to pancreatic cancer and two other grandparents to colon and breast cancer—he understands the devastating impact of the disease. Reflecting on the cherished memories of his grandparents, especially family gatherings in New Brunswick during Christmas and summer, Killorn shared how their love and support shaped him into the person he is today.

For Killorn, the campaign is not just about raising awareness but also about driving action. “If we can help motivate people to get screened, that can make a real difference,” he said. Killorn’s own experiences, including meeting young cancer patient MaKayla Muir during a Tampa Bay Lightning HFC event, have been deeply impactful. Muir’s courage left an indelible mark on Killorn, and her memory continues to inspire his advocacy.
Killorn’s efforts extend beyond campaigns. In 2020, he co-hosted a “Jam Kancer in the Kan” event, raising over $100,000 for the Moffitt Cancer Center’s Adolescent and Young Adult program. His commitment to the cause is fueled by a belief in using his platform to promote health, inspire action, and bring hope to those affected by cancer.
