Alfredo Morelos on the Move Again as Nacional Push for Permanent Deal Despite Controversy
Alfredo Morelos, the former Rangers star, has accepted a deal that could see him secure a permanent move to Atlético Nacional, a team he has been with on loan. The Colombian striker, who became a household name at Ibrox for his goal-scoring prowess and combative style, is now looking to move forward despite facing a series of off-field controversies.
Morelos’ recent troubles stemmed from a drink-driving incident in his homeland of Colombia, which involved a crash with a motorcyclist that left the rider with severe injuries. Although the legal battle over the arrest and the breathalyzer test procedures has been ongoing, the former Rangers forward has been able to play for Nacional following an initial suspension. His lawyers contested the validity of the procedures, which led to a reduction of his punishment. The striker's on-field form has also improved; Morelos scored in two consecutive games for Nacional against Deportivo Pasto and Sante Fe.

Despite his off-field issues, Nacional’s president, Sebastián Arango Botero, publicly expressed a strong desire to keep Morelos beyond his loan deal, which expires on December 31. Arango stated, “We want to continue counting on him. He is a great person with whom we have a great relationship. We want to extend his stay at Nacional, especially now that we will return to international competition next year.” Morelos, who spent six years at Rangers, scoring 124 goals in 269 appearances, is reported to be happy at Nacional, with his family also content in the Colombian city. Arango is optimistic about reaching an agreement with Santos, his parent club, although he acknowledged that the deal may not be simple.
Morelos’ time at Rangers ended after a turbulent final season, and he found himself without a club for months before joining Santos. His stint in Brazil was short-lived and unsuccessful, with Santos being relegated and Morelos struggling to find his form, scoring only four goals in 17 appearances. His time there saw him eventually sidelined for "technical reasons," before a loan to Atlético Nacional.
Now, with the possibility of another move to a new team, Morelos finds himself at a crossroads in his career. A new chapter might take him to Peru, as Universitario, the Peruvian champions, are reportedly considering him for their upcoming season. This potential move would be his fifth country of play, after stints in Colombia, Finland, Scotland, and Brazil. Despite his rocky journey since leaving Rangers, Morelos is still regarded as a strong asset, and his next move could define his future in the football world.
As he navigates both personal and professional challenges, Morelos' supporters continue to believe in his potential, and Nacional's efforts to secure him permanently reflect that faith. Time will tell if he can find stability and success once again on the pitch.
