Chelsea Dominates Astana as Youth Players Shine in Conference League Victory
Chelsea's 3-1 victory over Astana in Kazakhstan marked a decisive moment for both the team and the club’s future, as manager Enzo Maresca boldly turned to youth in a match that saw the Blues cruise to a comfortable win. With their place secured in the last 16 of the Conference League, Chelsea showcased both experience and raw potential on a freezing night in Almaty, where temperatures plummeted to around -10°C.
Maresca's decision to field a lineup brimming with youth paid off. Among the standout performances were those of 18-year-old defender Josh Acheampong and 19-year-old midfielder Samuel Rak-Sakyi, both of whom were handed full debuts in the senior squad. These players had been with the club since their early years, and their seamless integration into the team underscored Chelsea's commitment to nurturing homegrown talent.

The game kicked off with an early goal from Marc Guiu, who added another goal to his tally with a brilliant solo effort, putting Chelsea ahead early. By the 18th minute, Guiu had already scored twice. His first was a dazzling run from the right wing, where he breezed past his defender and coolly finished inside the post. The second came after a rebound off the goalkeeper following a low cross, cementing Chelsea's early dominance. Renato Veiga added a third goal for Chelsea before halftime, meeting a corner with a powerful header that left Astana's goalkeeper helpless.
Despite being outclassed, Astana managed to pull one back through Marin Tomasov. His superb strike off the post in the second half gave the home fans something to cheer about, but it wasn’t enough to alter the outcome. The visitors continued to dominate possession and could have added further goals had it not been for a few missed chances and Astana's occasional resilience.
Maresca, mindful of the physical demands on his players, gave senior debuts to more youngsters in the second half. Ato Ampah, Shumaira Mheuka, and Kiano Dyer all made appearances, with Mheuka making a notable impact as Chelsea's second youngest player ever in European competition.
With a comfortable lead, Chelsea eased off in the second half, but the damage had already been done. As they look ahead to their Premier League fixture against Brentford, this win not only secured their progress in Europe but also showcased the promising future of the club's academy.
