Avalanche Shake Up Goaltending, Acquire Mackenzie Blackwood in Multi-Player Trade
In a significant move that has reshaped the Colorado Avalanche’s goaltending lineup, the team traded Alexandar Georgiev to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Mackenzie Blackwood. This trade, announced on Monday, includes a multi-asset exchange, signaling strategic shifts for both teams as they aim to optimize their rosters. Along with Georgiev, the Sharks received forward Nikolai Kovalenko, a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, and a second-round pick in 2026. Meanwhile, Colorado also secured forward Givani Smith and a fifth-round pick for 2027.
This marks a pivotal moment for Colorado, as they overhaul their goaltending setup. Blackwood, a 28-year-old netminder, brings a 6-9-3 record, a 3.00 goals-against average, and a .911 save percentage from 19 games this season. Notably, he faced an average of 33 shots per 60 minutes, ranking among the most tested goaltenders this season. His ability to maintain composure under pressure makes him a promising addition for the Avalanche, who previously struggled with an .882 5-on-5 save percentage, one of the lowest in the league.

Blackwood is no stranger to transitions; this is his second trade in as many years, following his move from the New Jersey Devils to the Sharks in 2023. Now in the final season of his two-year, $4.7 million contract, Blackwood has the potential to become a game-changer for Colorado, possibly debuting against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.
On the other side, Georgiev heads to San Jose after a season with mixed performances. With an 8-7-0 record, a 3.38 GAA, and a .874 save percentage in 18 games, he has struggled to replicate the success of his previous two seasons. His experience, however, and past achievements, including consecutive seasons with 38 and 40 wins, suggest he could thrive in a new environment.
This trade is also significant for its additional assets. Kovalenko, a promising forward with eight points this season, joins a rebuilding Sharks team. Meanwhile, Givani Smith, known for his physical presence, adds depth to Colorado’s lineup. Both teams appear to have positioned themselves to address immediate needs while laying groundwork for future success.
