Billy Bob Thornton Explains Why He Rejected Iconic Villain Roles
Billy Bob Thornton has always been known for his eclectic choice of roles, from his memorable performance as the foul-mouthed antihero in Bad Santa to his nuanced portrayal of a high school football coach in Friday Night Lights. However, there’s a certain type of role he consciously avoids: the blockbuster villain. Thornton shared that he was offered the role of Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin, in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. While this character later became iconic under Willem Dafoe’s portrayal, Thornton wasn’t interested in the grueling process required for such a role. “I didn’t feel like getting up at 4 a.m. for five or six hours of makeup,” Thornton admitted, referencing the physical demands of transforming into the menacing comic-book antagonist.
Years later, Thornton found himself considering another villainous role—this time as the antagonist in Mission: Impossible III, the arms dealer Owen Davian. Here, Thornton’s reasoning took a different tone. “I didn’t want to be the guy trying to kill Tom Cruise,” he explained. “If you’re the bad guy in a big movie like that, audiences remember it forever. I prefer to keep things looser and less predictable.” Indeed, Philip Seymour Hoffman ultimately took on the role and delivered a chilling performance.
Thornton’s choice not to be remembered as the face of evil in such high-profile projects reflects his commitment to career versatility. While many actors dream of being immortalized in blockbuster franchises, Thornton values a more understated approach, opting for roles that allow him greater creative freedom.
