Blackhawks Part Ways with Luke Richardson, Name Anders Sorensen Interim Head Coach
In a surprising and decisive move, the Chicago Blackhawks announced they have relieved Luke Richardson of his duties as head coach. This marks a significant turning point for the franchise as they continue their rebuilding process. Blackhawks General Manager, Kyle Davidson, shared that while the decision was a difficult one, it was ultimately made to align with the team's pursuit of better results. Despite Richardson's hard work over the past three seasons, the Blackhawks’ performance this season didn’t meet expectations, prompting a change at the helm.
Davidson expressed his gratitude for Richardson's dedication and contributions to the team and the community, but emphasized that the Blackhawks needed a higher level of execution to make the leap forward in their rebuilding efforts. Blackhawks Chairman and CEO Danny Wirtz fully supported the decision, praising the leadership of Davidson and his Hockey Operations team as they now turn their focus to finding the next head coach to lead the organization forward.

As the Blackhawks move forward without Richardson, they have appointed Anders Sorensen, the head coach of the Rockford IceHogs, as interim head coach. Sorensen, who is 49 years old and hails from Södertälje, Sweden, has spent the last six seasons coaching the IceHogs, leading the team to its first Calder Cup Playoffs appearance in several years. His experience with Rockford includes a 117-89-16-7 record in the AHL, and he has proven his ability to develop players and guide the team to postseason contention. Sorensen is stepping into the role immediately, and will aim to provide a fresh perspective for the Blackhawks moving forward.
Meanwhile, Mark Eaton, the Blackhawks' Assistant General Manager responsible for player development, will take over as interim head coach of the IceHogs. With his deep understanding of the Blackhawks’ organization and the development pipeline, Eaton is well-positioned to guide the AHL affiliate during this transition.
Richardson’s departure comes amid a challenging season for the Blackhawks, who have struggled to maintain consistency on the ice.
