Braves Add Depth with Davis Daniel Acquisition
The Atlanta Braves have made a noteworthy move to bolster their pitching depth, acquiring right-hander Davis Daniel from the Los Angeles Angels. In exchange, the Braves sent minor-league left-hander Mitch Farris to the Angels. This transaction reflects Atlanta’s ongoing efforts to solidify their roster heading into the 2025 season.
Davis Daniel, 27, has shown potential but struggled to find consistent success in the major leagues. Over the last two seasons with the Angels, Daniel made nine appearances, including six starts, accumulating a 5.06 ERA across 42 2/3 innings. While his numbers at the major league level may not be remarkable, his performance in Triple-A tells a different story. Pitching for the Salt Lake Bees, Daniel logged 118 innings in 2024 with a 5.42 ERA, largely influenced by the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. Encouragingly, he struck out 23.3% of batters while maintaining a low walk rate of 6.5%, showcasing his potential to excel in a more balanced environment.

The Braves, known for their analytical approach to player development, likely see Daniel as a project with significant upside. With an option year remaining, he offers Atlanta flexibility, allowing him to serve as a depth piece in their rotation without immediately occupying a spot on the active roster. Daniel joins a group of pitchers competing for back-end rotation roles, including Ian Anderson, AJ Smith-Shawver, Bryce Elder, and others.
On the flip side, Mitch Farris, a 2023 14th-round pick, heads to the Angels. The 24-year-old demonstrated promise in Atlanta’s minor league system, posting a 3.08 ERA across 108 innings in 2024. With a 30% strikeout rate and the potential to develop further, Farris adds depth to the Angels’ farm system and represents a solid return for a player they had designated for assignment.
This trade underscores Atlanta's commitment to fortifying their roster for a long and competitive season. Daniel's Triple-A numbers and underlying metrics suggest untapped potential, making him a strategic addition. While he may not immediately headline the rotation, his role as a depth piece could prove invaluable as the Braves navigate the grind of the 2025 season.
