Canucks' Epic Comeback Sees Suter Lead Vancouver to 5-2 Victory Over Blue Jackets
In an impressive turnaround, the Vancouver Canucks battled back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 at Rogers Arena on Friday. Pius Suter was the star of the night, scoring twice in the third period to lead his team to victory. Brock Boeser added to the excitement with a goal and an assist, reaching a significant milestone with 400 career NHL points.
Despite being outshot 17-2 in the first period, the Canucks found themselves trailing 2-0 going into the locker room. It marked the 15th time this season Vancouver had conceded the first goal, but the team has shown a resilient spirit, improving to 9-5-1 in those situations. After a frustrating start, the Canucks found their rhythm in the second period, with Boeser pulling one back at 3:52 with a beautiful one-timer following a crafty play from Quinn Hughes.

Late in the second period, Vancouver caught a break. A miscommunication by Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins led to a turnover that allowed Kiefer Sherwood to tie the game at 2-2. The Canucks capitalized on the momentum shift and dominated the third period.
Suter, who has been on a hot streak this season, scored his first goal of the period at 2:17, taking a pass from below the goal line and firing a quick wrist shot past Merzlikins to give Vancouver a 3-2 lead. Jake DeBrusk extended the lead to 4-2, deflecting a point shot on the power play, while Suter sealed the win with an empty-netter at 18:55.
Boeser’s assist on DeBrusk’s goal was a special moment, as it marked his 400th point in the NHL, all with the Canucks. “It means a lot just to do it with the guys in this room and the fan base,” said Boeser, reflecting on the achievement.
Columbus, despite a strong first period and goals from Mathieu Olivier and Damon Severson, couldn’t maintain their lead. The team struggled with their special teams, finishing 0-for-3 on the power play. Blue Jackets coach Dean Evason lamented the mistakes in the third period, highlighting the team’s lack of defensive coverage and penalty issues as key factors in their defeat.
Vancouver's victory came at a crucial time as they were starting a six-game homestand after a successful road trip. With key players like Boeser and goalie Thatcher Demko stepping up, and with Suter's growing confidence in his shot, the Canucks are proving they can come from behind and secure wins, no matter the adversity.
