Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk Faces Doping Controversy After Failed Test
In a shocking turn of events, Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been provisionally suspended following a positive result from a routine anti-doping test. The Football Association (FA) informed the Premier League club about the adverse finding, which reportedly stemmed from a sample Mudryk provided after international duty with Ukraine in November. The substance detected is meldonium, a drug banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since 2016. The 23-year-old Ukrainian international, who joined Chelsea in January 2023 for a hefty fee of €70 million, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, claiming he has never knowingly used any banned substances.

Several athletes from other sports have been penalized for testing positive for meldonium, including former tennis world No. 1 Maria Sharapova, who was banned for 15 months after her case was appealed.

Mudryk’s positive test has raised eyebrows, especially given the serious repercussions that follow such violations. The FA’s anti-doping regulations enforce strict liability, meaning that a player is found guilty if a prohibited substance is found in their system, regardless of intent. The potential penalty could be as severe as a four-year suspension, although mitigating factors could reduce it. Mudryk, however, insists that he did not knowingly take the substance and has expressed shock at the result. He has stated that he is working with his team to investigate how this could have happened, and is hopeful of clearing his name soon.
Mudryk's absence has already been felt at Chelsea, where he had started to show signs of improvement under manager Enzo Maresca.
