Chelsea's Tough Trip to Kazakhstan Ahead of Premier League Clash with Brentford
Chelsea are gearing up for an intense and challenging week as they face Astana in the UEFA Conference League, followed by a Premier League encounter with Brentford just three days later. The Blues will have to endure a grueling 16-hour round trip to Kazakhstan, which is expected to put a strain on their players ahead of the Sunday match. The team’s boss, Enzo Maresca, has openly acknowledged the physical toll this will take, describing it as "not normal" for players to travel such a long distance and then be expected to perform at their best just days later.
The journey itself is no small feat. Chelsea will embark on an eight-hour flight to Almaty, located in the southern part of Kazakhstan, for the match against Astana. The game is being played 600 miles away from Astana’s usual home due to renovations at their capital's stadium. The team will return to London early Friday morning, leaving them with just a short recovery time before their Sunday evening Premier League fixture against Brentford. The Blues are currently in second place in the Premier League, just four points behind Liverpool, and need a strong performance to maintain their push for the top spot.

This long trip is complicated further by the fact that Chelsea’s flight will avoid certain airspaces, including those over conflict zones, extending the travel time. The team will also face sub-zero temperatures in Kazakhstan, with forecasts predicting a chilling -11°C. Additionally, Chelsea will stay on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) throughout their brief stay, making the physical and mental adjustments even more challenging. Maresca has made it clear that some of his key players will be rested for this trip, with youth players filling in and traveling to Kazakhstan. Notably, England winger Noni Madueke will not be making the trip, while Portugal’s Pedro Neto is unavailable due to suspension for the Brentford match.
Among the young players making the journey are Ato Ampah, Shumaira Mheuka, and Harrison McMahon, who will all be looking for opportunities to make their mark. Some players like Josh Acheampong are expected to start, with the 18-year-old academy defender in line for a senior debut. Chelsea’s squad has seen a fair amount of change, with a mixture of youth and experience being brought into the fold. For some of these young talents, the trip to Kazakhstan represents a valuable opportunity to gain more exposure and showcase their potential.
Despite the difficult circumstances, the Chelsea squad is prepared to give their best. As defender Axel Disasi put it, the players will "just have to put on two pairs of gloves" to cope with the cold and "be ready to compete in these conditions." Maresca’s team, already having secured their spot in the knockout stages of the Conference League, will look to maintain their perfect record in the competition while keeping their focus on the upcoming Premier League clash. The Premier League has agreed to a later kick-off time on Sunday, at 19:00 GMT, in recognition of the challenging travel situation.
This demanding trip to Kazakhstan highlights the physical and mental challenges that top-level football teams face when balancing multiple competitions. Chelsea will need all their resilience to navigate this tight schedule and ensure they can perform both in Europe and at home. With young players stepping up and the seasoned professionals providing leadership, it promises to be a memorable few days for the Blues.
