Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason Set to Be Placed on IR for the 49ers

In a blow to the San Francisco 49ers, both Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason are set to be placed on injured reserve following injuries sustained in Sunday night's game. Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Monday that McCaffrey will be sidelined for at least six weeks due to a PCL injury in his right knee. While the injury does not require surgery, this will keep him out for the remainder of the regular season. McCaffrey, who has faced ongoing injury challenges over the past few seasons, had been playing through bilateral Achilles tendinitis earlier this year, missing the first eight games of the season. Before this latest setback, he had been a major force in the 49ers’ offense, earning AP Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2023. However, with this knee injury, he will finish the 2024 campaign with just 202 rushing yards and 146 receiving yards across four games.

In addition to McCaffrey’s injury, the 49ers will also be without running back Jordan Mason, who suffered a high-ankle sprain. This injury will also see him placed on IR, leaving the team with fewer options in the backfield as they prepare for Week 14. The absence of both McCaffrey and Mason means that rookie Isaac Guerendo is now in line to be the 49ers' leading back. Guerendo, who has had limited opportunities this season, has rushed for 246 yards and two touchdowns, along with five catches for 19 yards. With Guerendo stepping up, the 49ers are facing a tough challenge in maintaining their offensive firepower in the coming weeks.

Mason had been a key contributor to the 49ers’ ground game this season, leading the team with 789 rushing yards, three touchdowns, and an impressive 5.2 yards per carry average. Losing both of their top backs in one fell swoop is a significant setback for the team, especially as they prepare for a pivotal stretch in the season.

Adding to the injury woes, defensive tackle Kevin Givens also suffered a torn pectoral muscle in the same game, and he too will be placed on IR. However, there is some positive news on the injury front, as the 49ers are expected to activate safety Talanoa Hufanga from IR soon, which should bolster their defense in the coming weeks.

As the 49ers look ahead to Week 14 against Chicago, they will be keeping an eye on several other players, including star defensive end Nick Bosa (who is dealing with an oblique injury) and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (who is nursing an Achilles injury). With so many key players sidelined, it remains to be seen how the team will adjust, but it’s clear that this stretch of injuries has put a serious strain on their roster.
