Delaware State Eyes DeSean Jackson for Head Coach Role
Delaware State University is making headlines as it explores a bold move to revitalize its football program. Reports suggest that the university is finalizing a deal to hire former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson as its next head coach. This potential appointment underscores the growing trend of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) turning to former professional players to lead their athletic programs.
At 38, Jackson brings a wealth of football experience and name recognition to the table. Having last played in the NFL during the 2022 season, his playing career spanned 15 years with six teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Known for his explosive speed and deep-threat capability, Jackson averaged over 17 yards per catch across his career. His standout season came in 2013, where he racked up 82 receptions for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns. His resume also boasts three Pro Bowl appearances, cementing his legacy as one of the league's premier wide receivers of his era.

If the deal materializes, Jackson would replace Lee Hull, who struggled during his two-year tenure. Delaware State finished the 2024 season with a dismal 1-11 record, continuing a challenging streak after a 1-10 season in 2023. The program’s last winning season was in 2022 with a modest 5-6 record. With such a difficult recent history, the Hornets are banking on Jackson's NFL pedigree and leadership potential to attract talent and rebuild the team’s identity.
Interestingly, Jackson isn't new to coaching, having spent the 2024 season as an assistant coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. If he takes the helm at Delaware State, he will join fellow former NFL star Michael Vick, now head coach at Norfolk State. The two, once teammates with the Eagles, are poised to rekindle their competitive spirit as coaches in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
