DoorDash Joins Forces with Local Nonprofits to Provide 1,000 Thanksgiving Meals to Angelenos
This Thanksgiving, DoorDash partnered with local organizations to provide 1,000 meals to families in need across Los Angeles. The initiative was a collaboration with the Ward Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), Mothers in Action, and Brotherhood Crusade, aimed at ensuring that some of the city's most vulnerable residents could enjoy a festive meal. This marks the 29th year that WEDC has organized the Thanksgiving meal program, which helps address the challenges faced by local communities in accessing nutritious food.
The meals were delivered to families served by WEDC, primarily focusing on those in South Los Angeles, a region known for its high rates of food insecurity. According to a report from USC Dornsife, more than 1 million residents across Los Angeles County struggle with food insecurity, and South LA is one of the areas hardest hit, with one in four people unsure where their next meal will come from. This is a significant issue that has been exacerbated by ongoing economic challenges, limited access to fresh food, and transportation barriers.

The meals were distributed from WEDC’s Ward Villas Senior Housing facility, a central location in Los Angeles that serves as a hub for delivering vital resources to the local community. The partnership with DoorDash played a crucial role in expanding the reach of the program. As a delivery service provider, DoorDash helped ensure that the meals could be efficiently distributed to families who might otherwise have trouble obtaining them.
Alejandra Velázquez, Head of Western Regional Government Relations at DoorDash, emphasized the company's commitment to empowering local communities. She highlighted how the collaboration with organizations like WEDC is integral to their mission, helping to increase food access for underserved communities. This partnership was especially impactful in communities represented by Marqueece Harris-Dawson, the Los Angeles City Council President, who expressed gratitude for the meals that reached hundreds of families in need.
As Thanksgiving is a time for both giving thanks and coming together as a community, the event reinforced the spirit of togetherness. It also showcased the importance of addressing food insecurity, which not only affects immediate needs but also has long-term health impacts, contributing to chronic diseases like diabetes and mental health issues. By supporting efforts like this, DoorDash and its partners are helping to provide not just meals, but hope and stability to families in South Los Angeles during a time when it’s most needed.
This effort serves as a reminder of the critical role that partnerships between businesses and local nonprofits can play in tackling complex social challenges and bringing meaningful support to communities in need.
