'Dune 2' Misses Out on Golden Globe's Box Office Nomination: Here's Why
In a surprising turn of events, Denis Villeneuve's highly anticipated epic sequel Dune: Part Two has not been included in the Golden Globes’ newly introduced "Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement" category. This category was introduced last year, where Barbie took home the trophy, celebrating films that have not only garnered significant box office success but have also achieved global acclaim. While Dune 2 grossed over $700 million worldwide, it was notably absent from the list of eight films nominated for this award.
The reason behind this omission is tied to a decision made by the filmmakers and the studio. According to Golden Globe voting member Cláudio Alves, the film was simply not submitted for consideration in this category. While Dune 2 grossed well beyond the necessary $100 million domestic threshold, it wasn’t put forth by its distributors. Alves clarified that voting members can only vote for films that were officially submitted, and in this case, only 16 films were put forward for the box office award.

Interestingly, this year's crop of nominees includes Alien: Romulus , Beetlejuice , Deadpool and Wolverine , and others—none of which had the box office success of Dune 2 . So why wasn’t Dune 2 in the mix? The decision seems to be part of a strategic move. According to sources close to the film, the studio and its campaign team were hesitant to submit Dune 2 for this category, viewing it as potentially seen as a "consolation prize" that would detract from its artistic merit. Instead, they chose to focus on Dune 2 ’s critical acclaim, which saw the film receive nominations for Best Picture (Drama) and Hans Zimmer's incredible score.
By focusing on these top-tier categories, the filmmakers likely hope to emphasize Dune 2 as an artistic achievement rather than just a commercial hit. This decision follows the precedent set by the first Dune film, which received 10 Oscar nominations, including six wins. This sequel is expected to repeat the success, with hopes that Villeneuve will finally get a much-deserved nomination for Best Director, something he was shockingly snubbed for during the first film's award season.
As the Golden Globes approaches in January, Dune 2 continues to be a contender in the major categories. However, the decision not to enter the box office achievement race has sparked conversations about the evolving nature of award categories and how films are positioned in the ever-competitive awards landscape. Despite this snub, Dune 2 remains one of the most acclaimed films of 2024, and it will surely have a strong presence at the upcoming Oscars.
