Edinburgh's Hogmanay Celebrations Cancelled Due to Extreme Weather Conditions
Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations, one of the most iconic New Year's festivals in the world, have been cancelled this year due to extreme weather conditions that pose serious safety risks. As the forecast predicts heavy rain and strong winds over the next few days, event organizers have made the difficult decision to cancel all outdoor events planned for December 30th and 31st, including the famous fireworks display and the much-anticipated concert by the band Texas.
The decision, announced by Unique Assembly, the company responsible for organizing the festival on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council, was made in light of the severe weather warnings issued by the Met Office. High winds and rainfall of up to 70mm are expected to hit Edinburgh, making it unsafe for large crowds to gather. As a result, the street party and other outdoor events along Princes Street have been scrapped. The cancellation is a huge blow to both locals and tourists who have traveled from all over the world to celebrate the New Year in the Scottish capital.
In addition to the outdoor events, the traditional Torchlight Procession, which marks the beginning of Hogmanay celebrations, was also called off on Sunday due to the high winds. These cancellations, though disappointing, are in place to ensure public safety, as strong gusts of wind could create dangerous conditions for people in crowded spaces and for the structures set up for the celebrations.

For those who had planned to attend, refunds will be issued for tickets to the outdoor events. However, indoor events such as the Idlewild concert at the Assembly Rooms and the candlelit concert at St Giles' Cathedral will go ahead as scheduled. These events offer a chance for those still in Edinburgh to experience the spirit of Hogmanay, albeit in a more intimate and indoor setting.
The decision has been met with disappointment from many, particularly those who had traveled internationally to experience the festival. One family from the United States shared their devastation after flying in with their children, only to find that the events they had saved for and looked forward to had been cancelled. Such cancellations are not unheard of, as the Hogmanay celebrations were also called off due to severe weather in 2003 and 2006.
The weather in the UK this year is predicted to cause widespread disruption. Apart from Scotland, heavy rain, snow, and wind warnings are in place for much of the UK, including Northern Ireland, Wales, and northern England. These weather conditions are expected to lead to travel disruptions, with delays in public transport and potential flooding in some areas. In some parts of the Highlands, an amber warning has been issued due to the risk of flooding, with some roads expected to be impassable.
While these conditions have forced the cancellation of large outdoor events, the safety of the public remains the top priority. Organizers have emphasized that, while this decision was not taken lightly, it is the only option given the extreme weather conditions. As we approach the New Year, it’s important for everyone to stay updated on the latest weather alerts and take precautions to stay safe.
Despite the cancellation, the city of Edinburgh will still host a variety of indoor activities, and many are choosing to embrace the New Year's spirit in smaller, safer settings. Although the Hogmanay celebrations may look different this year, the resilience and sense of community will no doubt shine through as we enter 2025.
