Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Auckland Open Due to Back Injury, Faces Fitness Challenge Ahead of Australian Open
Emma Raducanu, the British tennis sensation who rose to fame after her stunning 2021 US Open victory, has had to withdraw from the first tournament of the new tennis season, the ASB Classic in Auckland, due to a back injury. The 22-year-old was scheduled to face Robin Montgomery in the opening round of the tournament but was forced to pull out after struggling with back issues that have plagued her in recent weeks. Raducanu expressed her disappointment in a statement, saying she had done her best to prepare for the event but was not ready in time due to the injury.
This withdrawal marks another setback in Raducanu’s ongoing battle with injuries, which have interrupted her promising career since her breakthrough in New York. In 2023, Raducanu had to deal with several injury struggles, including a foot issue that kept her out for nearly two months at the end of the season. Despite this, she made an impressive return by helping Great Britain at the Billie Jean King Cup, winning all three of her matches. However, her preparation for the new year has been hindered once again by this latest back injury.

To address her physical concerns, Raducanu has recently hired renowned fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura, who has been working with her on a more tailored fitness regimen. Nakamura, known for his work with top athletes, has been with Raducanu in Auckland, but the injury has still prevented her from competing. Raducanu remains hopeful that with continued focus on strengthening her body, she will be better equipped to handle the demands of the sport and avoid further setbacks.
Looking ahead, Raducanu is now focused on making a recovery in time for the Australian Open, which starts on January 12. As a result of her current ranking of 56th in the world, she will not be seeded for the first Grand Slam of the year. Raducanu’s withdrawal from Auckland, combined with limited match play last season, leaves her facing a race against time to get fully fit before the season’s first major tournament. Nonetheless, she remains determined to continue working hard and making progress, and she will travel to Melbourne to continue her preparations for the Australian Open, hoping to put herself in the best position possible for the tournament.
It’s clear that Raducanu’s journey to reclaiming her place among the top players in tennis is one filled with challenges, but her determination and commitment to improving both physically and mentally remain strong. Fans will be hoping she can overcome these injuries and show the same level of brilliance that captured the world’s attention just a few years ago.
