Extra Financial Support for Over One Million Australians in 2025

Starting January 1, 2025, more than a million Australians will see an increase in their welfare payments as the government adjusts support to align with inflation. This annual indexation is a necessary step to help individuals manage the rising cost of living. Payments such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, and Carer’s Allowance will see notable increases, providing much-needed financial relief for young people, students, carers, and others who rely on these systems.

For those on Youth Allowance, fortnightly payments will rise by $17.30 to $24.30, with maximum rates reaching $670.30. Students receiving Austudy can expect increases of $24.30 to $26.30, bringing their payments to up to $845.80, depending on their circumstances. Carers will see a $5.80 increase, taking their allowance to $159.30 every two weeks. Indigenous students under the ABSTUDY program will also benefit, with support growing by up to $54 for advanced education levels.

These adjustments reflect a 3.8% increase, in line with the Consumer Price Index's rise over the last year. Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth emphasized that the changes aim to reduce financial hardship and maintain a robust social safety net for vulnerable Australians. The government has earmarked approximately $63.8 million annually for these increases, equating to around $10.1 million every fortnight.

However, advocacy groups like the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) argue that while the increase is beneficial, it may not be sufficient to address the broader issues of poverty. They highlight that annual adjustments leave beneficiaries struggling to cope with mid-year price surges for essential goods and services.

Despite criticisms, this indexation offers some relief for those grappling with financial strain. As cost-of-living pressures persist, these adjustments are a step towards supporting individuals in maintaining a basic standard of living.
