FDA Elevates Costco Egg Recall to Highest Risk Level Over Salmonella Concerns

Federal food safety regulators have raised an urgent alert regarding Costco eggs following concerns over potential salmonella contamination. The recall, initially issued on November 27, involved 10,800 cartons of organic, pasture-raised, 24-count eggs sold under Costco's Kirkland Signature label. These products, sourced from Handsome Brook Farms, were distributed in 25 Costco stores across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reclassified this recall to the most severe level—Class I. This means there is a "reasonable probability" that consuming the affected product could lead to serious health issues or even death.

The eggs in question are marked with a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 9661910680 and a Julian code of 327, with a use-by date of January 5, 2025. Consumers who have purchased these eggs are strongly advised to return them to Costco for a full refund or discard them immediately. As of the latest update, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. However, the FDA's heightened alert emphasizes the need for caution, particularly for vulnerable groups like young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, who are more likely to suffer severe consequences from salmonella infection.

Salmonella is a bacterial pathogen that can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms typically appear six hours to six days after exposure and can persist for up to a week. While most people recover without specific treatment, severe cases may require hospitalization and pose significant health risks.

This recall arose after the company discovered that eggs not meant for retail were mistakenly packaged and distributed. Handsome Brook Farms promptly initiated the recall to address the issue, underscoring its commitment to consumer safety. Still, the FDA's decision to elevate the classification underscores the importance of immediate action by consumers.

If you’ve purchased these eggs, don’t take any chances. Return them to your local Costco or dispose of them responsibly. Stay informed and prioritize your health and safety this holiday season.
