FTC Forces Epic Games to Refund Fortnite Players Millions Over Unlawful Billing

Big news for Fortnite players: refunds are on the way! Following a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, is issuing refunds totaling over $72 million to approximately 629,000 players in the U.S. These payments come after allegations that Epic Games used deceptive design tactics, also known as "dark patterns," to trick players into making unintended purchases. The FTC described these tactics as counterintuitive and confusing, leading to charges from accidental button presses during gameplay.

The refunds stem from a larger settlement finalized in 2023, where the FTC accused Epic Games of violating consumer protection laws and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Beyond refunding players, Epic Games was fined $520 million in 2022 for its practices. The company was also accused of enabling unauthorized charges by minors and restricting user access to purchased content if players disputed wrongful charges.

Eligible recipients who successfully filed claims by the October 8 deadline will receive an average refund of $114. The payments are being distributed via check or PayPal, with recipients advised to redeem funds promptly—checks must be cashed within 90 days, while PayPal payments must be accepted within 30 days. Additional refunds will be sent out later for players who filed claims after the initial deadline.

If you think you were affected but haven’t yet filed a claim, it’s not too late! Claims can be submitted online until January 10, 2025. Eligibility includes players who were charged for unwanted in-game items, parents whose children made unauthorized purchases, or users locked out of accounts after disputing charges. The process requires a claim number or Epic Account ID, and applicants under 18 must have a parent or guardian complete the form.

This landmark settlement underscores the growing scrutiny of digital marketplaces and the push for consumer protection. Epic Games' case is a significant reminder for developers to prioritize transparency and fair practices, especially in games frequented by younger audiences. For affected Fortnite players, these refunds offer both financial relief and a sense of justice after years of frustration. If you’re eligible, don’t miss the chance to claim your share of this major payout.
