Itch.io, a popular platform for indie game developers, recently experienced an unexpected outage that left its website offline for hours. The cause? A phishing report, allegedly initiated by Funko, the company known for its iconic Funko Pop! collectibles. This incident highlights the controversial role of AI-powered software in moderating and protecting brand rights online.
The disruption occurred early on Sunday night and lasted for several hours, with the website being inaccessible to most users. While games and content already purchased from the platform remained usable, the outage significantly impacted creators who rely on itch.io to distribute their work. The platform blamed Funko’s automated "AI-powered" Brand Protection Software for the takedown, calling it a "bogus phishing report" that led to the temporary shutdown. According to itch.io, the AI tool generated a false phishing warning, which was sent to the platform's domain registrar, iwantmyname, who then disabled the domain.
