Garth Brooks Faces Legal Setback in Sexual Assault Lawsuit
Garth Brooks, the country music legend known for hits like "Friends in Low Places," is facing a significant legal battle after a judge recently ruled against his request to dismiss a sexual assault lawsuit filed by a former makeup artist. According to court documents obtained by Fox News, the lawsuit, which was filed in California, will remain active as the judge decided to put the case on pause, pending the outcome of a separate lawsuit filed in Mississippi.
In September 2024, Brooks, 62, filed a lawsuit in Mississippi in which he sought to block the sexual assault accusations made by the woman, referred to as “Jane Roe.” In the complaint, Brooks denied the claims of rape and other sexual misconduct, which allegedly took place in 2019. He had asked the California court to transfer the case to Mississippi, where the woman lives. However, U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald ruled that the California case would be "stayed" until further developments in the Mississippi case, scheduled to conclude in the coming days.

This legal conflict stems from allegations that Brooks’ former makeup artist endured both physical and emotional abuse over several years. The lawsuit describes how Brooks allegedly made inappropriate sexual remarks, sent explicit texts, and even groped the woman on multiple occasions. The most serious claim is that he raped her during a trip to Los Angeles in 2019, while they were working on a Grammy tribute event for R&B singer Sam Moore. The woman claims that during this trip, Brooks appeared naked in the doorway of their shared hotel room, leading her to feel trapped and fearful.
In response to these serious allegations, Brooks has strongly denied all claims and maintains that he is the victim of extortion. He has repeatedly stated that the woman began making these accusations only after he refused her requests for financial assistance, including a salaried position with benefits. Brooks argued that after his refusal, she began demanding millions of dollars in exchange for not going public with these allegations, and he accused her of attempting to ruin his reputation.
As the case continues to unfold, Brooks has also filed a defamation suit, calling the allegations “demonstrably false” and asserting that they have caused him significant emotional distress. He described the situation as feeling like having a "loaded gun waved in my face," referring to the pressure he felt from the woman's demands for hush money. Brooks and his legal team have made it clear that they will not settle the case and are determined to clear his name.
At this stage, the legal process is still in its early phases, and both sides are gearing up for further legal proceedings. The saga surrounding Garth Brooks is far from over, as his legal team works to defend his character, while his accuser continues to press forward with her allegations.
