Guardians Trade Andrés Giménez to Blue Jays in Bold Winter Meetings Move
The Cleveland Guardians made headlines at the Winter Meetings by trading All-Star and Gold Glove second baseman Andrés Giménez to the Toronto Blue Jays. In a surprising multi-team deal, the Guardians sent Giménez and right-hander Nick Sandlin to Toronto in exchange for Spencer Horwitz and outfield prospect Nick Mitchell. Shortly after, Horwitz was flipped to the Pittsburgh Pirates for left-hander Josh Hartle, right-hander Luis Ortiz, and minor league left-hander Michael Kennedy.
This trade signals Cleveland’s intent to restructure and invest in their future. Giménez, despite his defensive excellence and a stellar 2022 campaign, saw his offensive performance dip over the past two seasons. Hitting around .250 with declining on-base and slugging numbers, he fell short of the lofty expectations set by his breakout year. Coupled with a backloaded contract that escalates to $23.57 million annually in its final three seasons, the Guardians decided now was the time to move him.

Financial considerations aside, this trade also reflects Cleveland’s confidence in their rising talent. The organization recently drafted second baseman Travis Bazzana with the No. 1 overall pick, who has already impressed in the minors. His development suggests he could reach the majors as early as 2025. To clear a path for Bazzana, Cleveland needed to create space in their infield, and moving Giménez was a logical, albeit bold, choice.
The Guardians also addressed their thin pitching depth by acquiring three promising arms. Ortiz, a 25-year-old right-hander, is a major league-ready option who could compete for a rotation spot in spring training. Meanwhile, Kennedy and Hartle are long-term projects with potential upside, fitting the Guardians’ history of developing top-tier pitchers.
For the Blue Jays, this deal strengthens their infield with Giménez, a versatile player capable of elite defense at both second base and shortstop. Toronto also bolstered their bullpen by adding Sandlin, a reliable reliever with strong strikeout potential.
