Originally from Newcastle, England, Michael's football journey began at a young age. He joined the Newcastle United academy when he was just 11 years old, and by 2016, he was awarded the prestigious 'Wor Jackie Trophy,' given to the club’s most outstanding young player. Michael’s talent on the field took him far, representing Northern Ireland's Under-21 team and eventually playing for Icelandic side Vikingur Olafsvik in 2018. His career path led him to a three-year stint at Linfield FC, where he further solidified his place in Northern Irish football before joining Cliftonville in the summer of 2024.

Cliftonville’s statement on his passing expressed the devastation felt by the club, saying, “Our condolences are extended to Michael’s family and friends, as well as the many teammates he played with during his career, and fans who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news.” Linfield FC, with whom Michael had shared memorable moments, also paid tribute, acknowledging the deep loss. “Linfield FC is devastated to learn of the sudden passing of our former player, Michael Newberry,” the club shared.
The NI Football League (NIFL) echoed this sentiment, with a spokesperson conveying heartfelt condolences to Michael’s loved ones and the football clubs that knew him. As a mark of respect for Michael, both Cliftonville's scheduled match against Dungannon Swifts and Linfield’s match against Larne were postponed. The decision was made in consultation with both clubs and the NIFL to allow everyone time to process the shock and grief of such a tragic loss.
