Wellington, in particular, faces significant challenges, with heavy downpours forecasted to affect the city’s motorways, potentially causing delays and hazardous driving conditions.
In the Cook Strait, high seas reaching swells of over four meters have disrupted ferry operations. KiwiRail has adjusted its Interislander sailing schedules to navigate the rough weather, while Bluebridge has canceled its overnight and morning trips to ensure passenger safety. The turbulent conditions are driven by a southerly change that’s sweeping across the country, bringing with it not just heavy rain but also the possibility of thunderstorms and hail.

Air travel has also felt the brunt of the adverse weather. Strong southerly winds have led to flight cancellations and diversions at Queenstown Airport, affecting services from Jetstar and Air New Zealand. Meanwhile, in Auckland, a lightning strike appears to have caused a temporary power outage in Mt Eden, plunging parts of the city into darkness before power was restored within an hour. Although Vector Electricity has resolved the issue, investigations into the exact cause are ongoing.
Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, and the Bay of Plenty remain under heavy rain watches, with thunderstorms expected to intensify the situation. The stormy conditions are part of a broader low-pressure system blanketing the country, which forecasters predict will persist through the week. While there may be occasional breaks in the weather, the low-pressure system poses a risk of sudden downpours and localized flooding.
