'Home Alone' Star Recalls a Shocking On-Set Incident
“Home Alone” remains a beloved holiday classic, but behind its light-hearted humor and mischievous antics lies a story of one particularly surprising on-set moment. Daniel Stern, who played one of the bungling burglars, recently opened up about a memorable and slightly "scary" incident involving his co-star, Joe Pesci, and the young lead actor, Macaulay Culkin.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Stern recounted how Joe Pesci, renowned for his intense performances, committed fully to his role as the intimidating Harry. During a scene where Pesci’s character was supposed to bite Kevin McCallister’s finger, things took an unexpected turn. Pesci accidentally bit Culkin’s finger for real, leaving both the actor and the young star stunned.

“I totally forgot about that,” Stern said. “Joe is wonderful—he’s a dear friend—but he’s a scary dude when he gets into character. We were trying to strike a balance in the first movie: to actually be frightening as villains before it became clear we were just clumsy idiots. That initial fear factor was essential to building the tension in the story.”
Stern recalled how the unintentional bite shook Pesci. “Joe immediately apologized. He was like, ‘Ahh, sorry I did that.’ It’s one of the only times I’ve ever seen Pesci really rattled. He felt terrible because he knew it was a mistake.”
Interestingly, Culkin later shared his perspective on the incident, revealing that the moment left a lasting mark—literally. “I still have a scar from that bite,” Culkin said during a Q&A. “I remember seeing Joe’s face after it happened, and he looked genuinely scared. He was probably thinking, ‘Oh no, I just bit a kid!’”
While the bite was unintentional, it’s now a part of the behind-the-scenes lore of Home Alone . The incident speaks to the level of commitment and authenticity the actors brought to their roles, even in a comedic family film. Fans can now look back on that iconic scene with a newfound appreciation for the real-life tension that unfolded during filming.
