Hydro-Québec Leaves a Resident’s Property in Ruins After Emergency Repairs

A Montreal-North resident, Normand David, is speaking out after his property was left in disarray following urgent work by Hydro-Québec and its contractors. After a power outage on November 13, the utility company was forced to replace two poles and relocate a transformer in the area. The aftermath, however, has left David frustrated with the damage to his property.

David describes the scene as a "disaster," pointing to uprooted hedges, piles of branches, and telecom wires scattered across his yard. He also noted significant damage to his paved driveway. According to David, Hydro-Québec’s team didn’t take any precautions when driving their equipment, such as using plywood to protect the surface. This led to about two inches of depression in the paved driveway, and his lawn was torn up. “They told me that when it’s an emergency, they don’t have to clean up the branches, but it’s more than just the branches. My driveway is ruined, and my hedges are destroyed,” he added.

During a visit from the news team, the scale of the destruction was clear. Telecom cables were dangling in the wind, some lying on the grass at the back of David’s home. The worker who initially responded to David’s complaint from Hydro-Québec was less than helpful. He suggested David rent a pressure washer to remove the tracks left by the machinery, and to “rake the soil” and add fertilizer to the damaged lawn. However, as a general contractor with experience working for Hydro-Québec’s subcontractors, David knows that the damage goes far beyond simple repairs.

For one, the trees around his property were completely destroyed, leaving only the stumps behind. The damage will require significant work, and David is certain some of the trees will never recover.

In response, Hydro-Québec acknowledged the situation. A company spokesperson confirmed that the company acted swiftly after receiving David’s complaint and assured him that compensation would be provided. “We acted quickly to ensure the client is compensated according to the damages our teams observed,” said the spokesperson. Hydro-Québec also opened a claims file on November 14 to negotiate appropriate compensation. As for the telecom wires, they will be relocated by Bell at a later time.

While Hydro-Québec has committed to providing restitution, it remains clear that emergency work, while necessary, has caused lasting disruption for this Montreal resident. The incident highlights the challenges homeowners face when essential services are carried out without proper care for surrounding properties.
