Hyman Shines in Return, McDavid Delivers Four Assists as Oilers Defeat Blue Jackets 6-3

In a thrilling game at Rogers Place on Thursday night, the Edmonton Oilers triumphed over the Columbus Blue Jackets with a convincing 6-3 victory, as Zach Hyman made an impressive return to the lineup, scoring twice. Connor McDavid, as usual, was the star of the show, registering four assists to help lead his team to victory.

Hyman, who had missed the previous five games due to an undisclosed injury, made an immediate impact. He opened his account with a one-timer goal in the first period after a beautiful no-look backhand pass from McDavid. "It was nice to get 'Hysey' back," McDavid said after the game. "It was nice to create some chances, and I thought 'Nuge' (Ryan Nugent-Hopkins) played well, as well. When you’ve got three guys playing well, it’s fun out there." The trio of McDavid, Hyman, and Nugent-Hopkins combined for eight points on the night, including two goals and six assists, proving to be a major force for the Oilers.

The Oilers’ offense clicked early, and after Hyman’s equalizer, Leon Draisaitl put Edmonton in front in the second period with a backhand goal, assisted by McDavid. It was another display of the remarkable chemistry between the Oilers’ dynamic duo. Moments later, McDavid added another assist on a Mattias Ekholm power-play goal to make it 3-1. Hyman’s second goal, a finish from a quick passing sequence with McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins, pushed the Oilers’ lead to 4-1 midway through the second.

Columbus didn’t go down without a fight. Damon Severson’s fluky goal, which bounced off an Oilers defender and went in, brought the Blue Jackets within two at 4-2. However, Jeff Skinner responded for the Oilers, scoring a beautiful backhand goal with just under two minutes remaining in the second period to make it 5-2.

The Blue Jackets pulled one back early in the third with a wrist shot from Cole Sillinger to cut the lead to 5-3. But Draisaitl sealed the win for Edmonton with a power-play goal at 13:37, capping off an outstanding night for the Oilers’ top players.

The victory, which marked a strong start to a stretch of eight out of nine home games leading into the Christmas break, also saw McDavid continue his impressive season. McDavid, who recently became the fourth-fastest player in NHL history to reach 1,000 career points, recorded a remarkable four assists. His playmaking ability was on full display, helping to set up key goals for his teammates. With his four assists, McDavid also became the fourth player in NHL history to record 120 assists in a calendar year, joining the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux in that exclusive club.

This victory for the Oilers was not just about individual achievements but also a testament to the team's depth. The Oilers dominated possession, outshooting the Blue Jackets 16-7 in the second period, and Calvin Pickard, stepping in for the injured Stuart Skinner, made 19 saves in a solid performance between the pipes.

As for Hyman, he expressed his satisfaction with his performance in his first game back. "Being back is the best. To get a win and being able to contribute feels good," he said. His two goals were a reminder of just how vital he is to the Oilers’ success, especially around the net.

For the Blue Jackets, despite some individual brilliance, including a goal and assist from Sillinger, the game slipped away as the Oilers’ offensive machine fired on all cylinders. With the loss, Columbus will now look to regroup before facing the Vancouver Canucks in the next game of their back-to-back series.

The Oilers will be hoping to carry this momentum into their upcoming games, with McDavid and his line continuing to look unstoppable. For now, however, it’s a well-deserved win and a statement performance for Edmonton as they head into a critical stretch of home games.
