India Women Extend T20 Dominance Over West Indies with Powerful Victory
India Women continued their commanding form against the West Indies, securing a convincing 49-run victory in the first T20I of the series held at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. This win marked India’s ninth consecutive T20I triumph against the Caribbean side, showcasing their dominance in the format.
The Indian batting lineup was led by a spectacular performance from Jemimah Rodrigues, who smashed an exhilarating 73 runs off just 35 deliveries. Her innings included nine boundaries and two sixes, solidifying her position as a key player at number three. Smriti Mandhana, equally impressive, contributed a steady 54 off 33 balls. Her knock, laced with seven fours and two sixes, pushed her past the 600-run mark for the year in T20Is and elevated her to the fourth spot among the top scorers in 2024. Together, Rodrigues and Mandhana powered India to a formidable 195/4, their highest total against the West Indies in this format.

West Indies began their chase with high hopes but suffered an early blow when their captain, Hayley Matthews, was dismissed for just one run after a brilliant catch by Minnu Mani off Titas Sadhu's bowling. Despite a valiant effort from young opener Qiana Joseph, who scored a brisk 49 off 33 balls, and a resilient 52 from veteran Deandra Dottin, the visitors fell short, managing only 146/7 in their 20 overs.
Sadhu emerged as India’s standout bowler, claiming three crucial wickets, including Matthews and Dottin, with figures of 3/37. Supported by Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav, who picked up two wickets each, the Indian bowlers delivered a disciplined performance that stifled the West Indies’ attempts at building substantial partnerships.
Rodrigues credited her remarkable innings to her strategic approach, stating, "My plan was simple—rotate the strike and capitalize on loose balls. I focused on pacing my innings and taking it five overs at a time."
The Indian team’s all-round effort underscored their readiness to maintain momentum in the series. For the West Indies, however, bouncing back will require tighter bowling and greater contributions from their batting lineup. As the teams prepare for the second T20I, India will look to seal the series, while the visitors must dig deep to keep their hopes alive.
