Injury Strikes Again as Maple Leafs' Goaltender Stolarz Exits in 3-2 Win Over Ducks

The Toronto Maple Leafs' injury woes continue to mount as goaltender Anthony Stolarz became the latest player to leave the game due to an injury during their 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. The incident occurred late in the first period when Stolarz, after facing a shot from Frank Vatrano on Anaheim's power play, appeared to hurt his right leg. Although Stolarz had been playing brilliantly in his previous game—a 38-save performance in a 2-1 overtime win against the New Jersey Devils—the injury forced him to leave after the first period, with Joseph Woll coming in as relief.

Head coach Craig Berube was unsure of the injury's severity but assured that more details would be available soon. "We'll know more tomorrow," he said, while expressing uncertainty over what exactly happened during the play. For Woll, stepping in during such circumstances was bittersweet. “It's kind of mixed emotions,” he shared. “You're obviously sad for him. I don't want him to get hurt and whatnot. At the same time, I have a job to do.”

Woll did an admirable job, making 19 saves in relief. Meanwhile, Toronto’s offense, led by Max Pacioretty’s two goals and an assist, kept the team on track. Pacioretty, playing his third game after recovering from a hamstring injury, was instrumental in securing the win, with his second goal midway through the second period proving to be the game-winner. Toronto's offense also saw contributions from William Nylander, who opened the scoring with a stunning goal in the first period.

The injury to Stolarz adds to the growing list of Maple Leafs who have faced injuries this season. Alongside him, notable players like captain Auston Matthews, Jake McCabe, and Max Pacioretty have all dealt with injuries, which has kept the team in a constant state of flux. McCabe, who returned from a five-game absence, and Pacioretty, playing after a lengthy recovery, were both crucial in the victory, though Pacioretty did have some missed opportunities late in the game.

Despite their injury troubles, the Maple Leafs (18-9-2) secured their second consecutive win, while the Ducks (10-14-4) continued to struggle, losing their fifth straight game. Anaheim had been hoping the addition of veteran defenseman Jacob Trouba, acquired in a trade with the New York Rangers earlier in December, would help stabilize their defense, but the team is still in a rough patch.

To add to Anaheim’s misfortunes, they were missing key forward Trevor Zegras, who will be out for six weeks after undergoing knee surgery. Meanwhile, a surprising return came from Robby Fabbri, who made his appearance in the lineup after recovering from knee surgery in less than four weeks—much sooner than expected.

With the Leafs battling through injury after injury, their resilience will continue to be tested. The real question now is how long Stolarz’s injury will keep him sidelined and how much further the team’s depth will be stretched in the coming weeks. For now, Toronto will celebrate the win, but the injury concerns loom large.
